Fire Power Issues #1-5 Review (spoilers)

Fire Power is a comic book by Robert Kirkman and issues 1 and 2 were released on August the 5th, 2020. I rushed to the comic store and bought issues 1 and 2 when I heard about the release of this series. The main character's name is Owen Johnson. He has the ability to shoot fireballs from his hands. I think this is a very cool ability.

1st issue: The first scene takes place at Owen's house where his wife asks if he's taken out the trash. We quickly realize Owen is a normal person living a normal life. Owen's children are running around the house. Owen heads to the grocery store to buy hot dog buns for a barbecue. He meets a man at the store. We don't know his name but it appears Owen has met him before. He's a mysterious person wearing a black suit. He asks Owen to meet him at a high school sports field at midnight. Owen and his family have the barbecue and invite many guests. After that is over Owen is with his wife and he quickly realizes it's almost midnight. He lies to his wife and says he is just going to watch some tv but in reality he's going to the sports field to meet this mysterious person.

Owen arrives at the sports field. The mysterious man is there. They talk for a bit and the mysterious person mentions that a person named Wei Lun is gone. We don't know who this is but we can already assume that Owen knows him. Both the mysterious man and Owen end up fighting each other. The mysterious man asks Owen to come back with him to a place called the temple. The 2 stop fighting and hug each other. Owen then goes back home to his wife.

What I thought of the first issue. The artwork was pretty good! Also I like the fact that the main character has a normal life and has a family. So we can relate to Owen. I give the first issue 8 out of 10.

2nd issue: Ninjas attack Owen's home. There's 7 pages of him fighting the ninjas which is epic! Owen's wife wakes up and grabs a shotgun. She asks if the ninja's are part of a clan called Scorched Earth. Owen doesn't know. The mysterious man who Owen met at the grocery store was behind the attack and visits his home. He still insists that Owen come back to the temple with him. The issue ends with the ninjas retreating... and at the very end one of the ninjas reports back to a mysterious old man who is wearing headphones and is holding a staff.

What I thought of the issue. The fact there was 7 pages of fighting was pretty awesome. Also when Owen's wife pulled out the shotgun that was cool too. She obviously has a firearm's license. I rate this issue 9 out of 10 higher than the first issue.

3rd issue: We learn Owen's wife is a police officer as she wears a uniform. She hops into a police cruiser and takes off. Next Owen drives his kids to school. Owen is then seen working on a table... we can assume he is some sort of carpenter or handyman for a living. Meanwhile Owen's wife is fighting crime. In the last few pages of the issue we learn the mysterious man from the grocery store is named Ma Guang and he is seen at a place that we can assume is the temple. On the last page they assemble a team to try and kill Owen.

What I thought of the issue. We finally know Owen's wife is a police officer and that gives us an explanation as to why she had a shotgun. We also learn Owen is some sort of a handyman for a living. We also finally know the name of the mysterious man from the grocery store. I rate this issue 9 out of 10 because we learn so much information.

4th issue: Owen is watching TV. Then next it shows 1 page of the temple and the monks there. Owen is then eating a meal with his father. He is asking Owen if he loves another girl besides his wife who's name is now revealed to be Kellie. Owen says that he is in love with this other girl from the temple but says he loves Kellie more. Fast forward a few scenes. Kellie and Owen are eating dinner at a restaurant. And out of nowhere the people from the temple that were hired by Ma attack Owen. This ninja girl has a chain and it wraps around Owen's neck. Owen uses his fireball to break the chain and shoots a fireball at the ninja girl. Meanwhile a huge man with a large metal club grabs Kellie by the neck and that is the end of the issue.

What I thought of the issue. I don't think much happened this issue tbh. This issue really builds up suspense for the next issue when they get attacked at the dinner and when Kellie is grabbed by the neck. I mostly thought that the end was building up suspense for the next issue. I rate this issue 8 out of 10.

5th issue: The man with the bat asks Owen where Jin is or else he will snap Kellie's neck. Kellie manages to break free and whips out her gun. Kellie holds up her police badge and tells everyone in the restaurant she is a cop and asks people to evacuate. We learn from the man with the bat that his order was to take Owen and Kellie alive. Meanwhile Kellie is thinking of the kids and that they might be in trouble. Sure enough they are in trouble as the ninjas attack the kids. Doug I think thats his name (owen's son).. gets hit in the head by one of the ninjas and is bleeding pretty badly. Owen comes to the recue and shoots a fireball. Owen and Kellie along with the kids take off in the car but the ninjas are still on their tale. Owen is outside of the car holding on and fends them off. This was a pretty epic scene. They later go to Reggie's place. Owen's son Doug is baffled that his dad can shoot fireballs from his hands. That;s when Owen explains that when he was younger he trained at a place called temple of the flaming fist. He goes on to say they used the body's energy to generate heat... intense heat that could ignite the air. Owen goes on to say this ability to generate heat is called the fire power. At the end of the issue the old man who was wearing headphones jumps through the window and talks to Owen.

What I thought of the issue. I think this is the best issue so far. The artwork for the fighting scenes was amazing. Owen's kids finally learn what their father is capable of. The end scene makes you really look forward to the next issue which comes out on the first wednesday of december. I rate this issue 10 out of 10.
